Reducing pain

Minimizing discomfort for babies during circumcision is important to Dr Williams. There are 3 ways to reduce circumcision pain and she uses all of them.

1-2 hours prior to you appointment, you will apply EMLA cream at home. There are instructions in the Pre-Procedure section of this site.

Just prior to the procedure, local anesthetic (lidocaine) is injected to block the nerves providing sensation to the penis and foreskin.

Finally, sucrose is given to baby in small amounts throughout the procedure while they suck on a pacifier/soother.

It is not usually necessary to give another oral pain medicine like acetaminophen before or after the procedure. Most parents do not find that their baby seems very fussy once home and the anestheic wears off.
