A few days prior to your son's circumcision appointment, Dr Williams will call the parent(s) to review the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

The day of the circumcision, you will apply EMLA cream to the penis.  EMLA is a topical anesthetic that is available over-the-counter or with a prescription. You want the smaller size (5g) tube. The cream numbs the skin so that the baby will feel less discomfort when the local anesthetic is injected.

The cream needs to be applied 1-2 hours before the appointment.

Apply about half of the tube in a 2cm radius around the base of the penis. Then cover with plastic wrap to keep the cream on the skin and not absorbed into the diaper.

If for some reason the circumcision appointment doesn't happen as planned (very rare, but bad weather or doctor being called away can happen), then the EMLA cream should be removed with a washcloth and baby should be bathed.

When you come to the hospital for your son's circumcision, please dress him in a one-piece sleeper that opens at the front (zipper or snaps) and bring a pacifier, even if your son doesn't usually take one.

Although the actual circumcision takes just a few minutes, you will be at the hospital about an hour total.
