Aftercare Instructions

Ring

The Plastibell ring and string will fall off, on average, in the next 5 to 7 days.

If the ring has not fallen off within 10 days after the circumcision, contact Dr Williams’ office to arrange a visit

Penis Care

Your baby can be bathed and diapered as if he had not been circumcised

You should apply petroleum jelly (i.e. Vaseline) to the circumcision site with every diaper change while the ring is still in place.

Keep poop away from the healing circumcision site as best you can. If the penis is badly soiled, bathe the baby immediately to rinse away any poop

Once the ring has fallen off, it is recommended to apply vaseline to the entire glans of the penis at least 2-3 times per day. Continuing this for several months following the procedure may help reduce complications related to scarring.

Nutrition and Elimination

Immediately following the circumcision your baby can be fed, and feeding should continue as before.

Your baby should eliminate normally and should void within 12 hours of the procedure. If your baby does not void in the first 12 hours following circumcision, he needs to be assessed urgently (likely through your closest ER).

Bleeding and other complications

Once you leave the hospital, you should not see any active bleeding. If you see new blood appearing at the circumcision site, then your baby needs emergency assessment.

Swelling of the shaft of the penis tends to increase in the first 24 hours after circumcision. If swelling or bruising are continuing to increase beyond this period, then you should contact Dr Williams’ office for advice

If the plastibell ring appears to slip down onto the shaft of the penis, this can create an emergency situation so prompt medical assessment is required.

Follow-Up

Dr Williams will phone you the morning after the circumcision to follow up and answer any questions. If there are concerns, she will arrange to see your son the same day in the office.

If you have questions or concerns related to your son's circumcision, please contact Dr Williams’ office, 519-787-7418. Be sure to let the staff know your son had a circumcision when calling.

In case of emergency you should go to your nearest emergency department (which may not be Groves).
